Fans of the circuit party scene in Europe would not be foreign to DJ GSP (George Spiliopoulos). Originally from Greece, GSP has been DJing professionally since the age of 17. He is now a London-based International DJ/Producer, Promoter and club owner.
Element gets in touch with DJ GSP to talk about his journey in the music industry.
Element : Who is GSP?
GSP : GSP is the DJ whose main goal is to make people happy.
Element : Can you share with us about your first DJ experience? What advice would you give to your younger self now?
GSP : Well, I started DJing when I was 13 years old when I provided music for special family occasions and parties at home. My main goal was to make people dance with a smile. Then I had my first professional gig when I was 17 years old at a beach bar on the island of Samos.
I was so nervous I was shaking for the first fifteen minutes. After I played the first track, the crowd started to dance and that reassured me. I continued for another five straight hours of pure house and techno set. After that, I received performance offers from biggest clubs on the island.
What I would advise my younger self is to be firm with people working together and no favours allowed. Being a professional DJ as well as keeping up my main goal, I always need to maintain high levels of standards.
Element : Who were some of your earlier influences and the first track you ever bought?
GSP : Dennis Ferrer, David Morales, Paul Oakenfold, Swedish House Mafia amd Mark Night. The first song I bought was not House music but the soundtrack of Aladdin. However, the first dance track I bought was CORONA – The Rhythm of The Night in 1993.
Element : What are you currently listening to?
GSP : I am now listening to classic House tracks between late 90’s and early 2000’s so that I can remix my favourite tracks to sound more current, maybe with some circuit beats. This will give the new generation an opportunity to experience these tracks and allowing them to experience good House music in a more modern style.
Element : What was your most memorable performance?
GSP : Ten years ago, I played at the legendary Cavo Paradiso at Mykonos for the very first time. I performed for the opening set as I was still considered an amateur back then. Then the promoter was impressed with my set and asked me to substitute for the closing set too. I saw the audience danced with a smile once I took over the decks. That moment with the sunrise in the background really made me cry. At the end of my set, I received a long applause from the audience and that was the best reward.
Element : Tell us about your latest gig in Circuit Barcelona.
GSP : It was amazing and I still receive great feedback via my social media till today. This is the second year I have worked with Matinee and I am very delighted. They are very organised and professional that I find hard to come across these days.
Element : Tell us about your tattoos.
GSP : I did my first tattoo eight years ago and never stop since then. My first tattoo was “GSP” on my right arm. The tattoos on my right are all about music and the left are about love and my other two passions. My favorite one was my last tattoo – a big “J” on my left hand. This was dedicated to my husband Jonathan, the love of my life!
Element : Choose one song to represent you.
GSP : “Love Is In The Air”. I always play this song as it is like my trademark. It says everything about me and my work.
Element : Are you in love right now?
GSP : I am more than in love. I have found my other half and he is the only person that makes me happy and I cannot live without. We recently got married in San Francisco, the best days of my life.
